Thanks for the tip on that Shadow Catcher book, Ali. Just got back from the library, where I was looking for a Samoan flavoured story that was a little bit different from the more household names like Albert Wendt and Sia Figiel. Will look out for Donald Sloan next time.. cheers :)

hey i'm Ali.
i love reading anything that has anything to do with Samoa in it. One of the books i came across was "The Shadow Catcher" by Donald Sloan. Great adventure story of a man exploring the Samoan culture and gives great insight of his experiences and how he took part in the old traditional Samoan culture. This adventure dates back to the early 20s or 30s I believe. Good book!

Where We Once Belonged is also a GREAT book by Sia Figiel!!
Awesome book!

IF YOU READ "KITE RUNNER" YOU WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE "A THOUSAND SPLENDID SUNS". PRETTY INTENSE STUFF...MY FAVORITE AUTHOR BACK IN MY HIGH SCHOOL DAYS WAS CHAIM POTTOK.

Watched the 1st showing of the play where we once belonged at Auckland Town Hall in March this year. Its so very emotional when u watch samoan work in live theatre, felt the same when I watched Fresh of Da Boat by Oscar Knightley. When Alofa gets a hiding by her dad after she caught him making out with her teacher. I swear the book is poetry in motion, but the play really puts the motion into emotion..Loved it, Sia Fiegals style of writing has a way of tying knots in your heart and making you feel like youve just run a marathon. Her followup book looks great too....

YES @ VEE! -> when I started up the group, it was a day after I re-read Where We Once Belonged for the 10th time .. and I was so gutted when I found out the the theatre adaption of one my favourite books of all time was being done in Auckland!! argh! I could've died, I was shattered.. but I hear they'll be doing a tour.. so hopefully, Melbourne is on the map! *crosses heart, hopes to die* haha..

:)

AWESOME!!!..

LET'S COLLECT FAVOURITE BOOKS!!! * list it in our DISCUSSION*

Hey I recognised this profile pic- promo shot from where we once belonged! Showed at my work- had a good laugh, mostly as some things were so relevant & topical you either had to laugh or cry at it's honesty!

For those who might also appreciate theatre works (vs literary) On a Different Shelf is the next goodie : )
