Spirited and fiercely written, Where We Once Belonged is an unflinchingly honest, poetic and often wildly funny coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of 1970s Samoa – a society on the cusp of change.

Alofa, Lili and Moa are typical teenage girls. They tease the local boys, misbehave at school and worship Charlie’s Angels. But there is a darker side to Alofa’s life. She struggles to win the acceptance of her unforgiving family.

As young Alofa Filiga navigates the mores and restrictions of village life, she begins to come to
terms with her own changing identity and the price she must pay for it.

It's been a while since I read this book. Is this the one with that scene between the girl and a much older Palagi man? lol..

I've been to a couple of Sia Figiel's readings. As great as her writing is, it's a whole other experience to watch her deliver her stories live... makes me think that maybe all Samoan literature is meant to be performed.

Something about us being natural performers? :)
yes. that scene with the famous American actor ;) haha..

:D i love this book, its poetic truth .
The stage play to this book was brilliant.... but definately not something I would take my parents to if you know what I mean.... lol.... surprisingly some very in your face scenes.....

Well worth seeing.... just like the book was well worth reading!

x0x
seki a le olomakua o Sia, i love her stories..i remember the day when she came to our skool SMC@Vaimoso,we were all excited and happy becoz she say that,SMC is her faviourite skool, in time of her skooling..becz were the only gal skool in town..
I liked this book but preferred her other book "Girl fromthe half-moon cirlce" (sorry title not quite right). I felt though that both books were written to be read... there were many incerpts that cried out to be performed and heard rather than merely read. I never saw the play but have heard that it was great.
OMG... Out of all people my little "maranda" recommended this book to me... lol.
just reading the first two lines of chapter one i was like :surprise: oi shole!
esp. that one song... :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
"Tatou te olioli"... hahaha
"a'o si teine o alofa, ua tu ma lomilomi..."
kdfu... you gotta love Sia Figiel... :)
