Lesson: Geography of Samoa

Samoa is a group of islands located in the Pacific Ocean, about half the distance from Hawaii to New Zealand.

The islands are divided politically into American Samoa and Samoa (an independent country formerly known as Western Samoa).

AMERICAN SAMOA

American Samoa is made up of the islands:

Tutuila
Manu'a (actually a group of islands called Ofu, Olosega and Ta'u)
Swains Island
Rose Atoll

The capital of American Samoa is Pago Pago, on the island of Tutuila.

Swains Island belongs to the Tokelau chain but is administered by American Samoa. Rose Atoll is an uninhabited wildlife refuge also know as Rose Island or Motu o Manu.

SAMOA

Independent Samoa is made up of:

Savaii (the largest of the Samoan Islands)
Upolu
Manono
Apolima

The capital of Samoa is Apia, Upolu.

Manono and Apolima are smaller islands located in the Apolima Strait that runs between Savaii and Upolu. At less than one kilometre square in size, Apolima is the smallest inhabited island of Samoa.

LAND & CLIMATE

The main islands of Samoa are volcanic and rugged with few coastal plains and rich fertile soil.

Swains and Rose Islands are both coral atolls.

Samoa's climate is tropical. Because it is located close to the equator, Samoa experiences little seasonal change throughout the year except for a 'rainy' period (around January) and 'dry' period (around July).

Samoa is sometimes prone to cyclones, the most recent of which was Cyclone Olaf in 2005.

Savaii is still an active volcano, although the last time it erupted was in 1911.
